GRIND 101

In order to get the most out of your coffee, it's important to grind your coffee beans to the correct size. Below are a few tips and recommendations for you to perfect your grind size!

GRIND FRESH

Freshly ground coffee is king! Grinding coffee exposes more of it to the air, which means that the coffee starts to go stale. For best results, grind the coffee just before you start to brew.

GET YOURSELF A GRINDER

If you really want to get the most from your coffee, we recommend you buy yourself a burr grinder and grind fresh. Its worth spending a little more on a burr grinder than a blade grinder. Burrs offer a more even coffee particle size (this is important) .The smell of freshly ground coffee is worth the cost alone! Hand burr grinders are a good, affordable staring point. If you are planning on pulling a lot of espresso shots, treat yourself to an electric burr grinder. Otherwise, you will be spending a lot of time and energy grinding.

DIAL IT IN

Grind size affects the surface area of coffee that is exposed to water, we use the term “extraction” to describe this. Smaller particles will have more contact with water, and therefore extract quicker than larger particles. If you extract too much from the coffee (grind too fine or brew too long), the coffee may taste bitter. Extract too little (grind too coarse or too little brew time) and you will under extract the coffee. This will leave you with sour flavours and a lack of depth. It will take some time and experience to get to the correct grind size, its worth it tho!

NO GRINDER?

Don't worry if you don't have a grinder yet, we sell coffee ground to 3 different sizes depending on your brewing method. To enjoy Silton Coffee to its maximum we do recommend you treat yourself and buy a burr grinder.
